SUMMARY:A conversation with Cyprian poet Eleni Kefala and translator Peter Constantine
DESCRIPTION:Join award-winning Modern Greek poet Eleni Kefala and translator of over nine languages Peter Constantine as they walk us through the collaborative process of writing and translating Kefala’s Time Stitches. The event will begin with a catered reception. After that\, there will be a poetry reading and a discussion on the role of literature\, translation\, and visual art in our current geopolitical moment. The event will be hosted by Dr Brian Sneeden. \n\n\n\n\nAbout the Speakers\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEleni Kefala is a senior lecturer in the School of Modern Languages at the University of Saint Andrews. Her second poetry collection\, Time Stitches\, was awarded the State Prize for Poetry in Cyprus. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPeter Constantine is a distinguished translator\, writer and activist dedicated to preserving and promoting linguistic diversity. His English translation of Time Stitches featured in the Words Without Borders’ ‘8 Poetry Collections in Translation to Read in 2022’ and was awarded the 2022 Elizabeth Constantinides Prize. Also an artist\, his Lost Wor(l)ds exhibition will be launched on the 20th of March and displayed at the Poetry Library until the 20th of April. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Host\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBrian Sneeden is a poet\, literary translator\, and editor. His poetry and translations from the Modern Greek have received many awards and recognitions\, including the Iowa Review Award in Poetry\, the NEA Literature Translation Fellowship\, the World Literature Today Translation Award for Poetry\, and the PEN/Heim Translation Grant. His most recent translation\, Giannisi’s Chimera\, is forthcoming from New Directions in 2024. He is a lecturer in creative writing and publishing at Manchester Metropolitan University.

SUMMARY:Lost Wor(l)ds: Intersemiotic Translations Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:As one of the last speakers of Arberishte\, a sister language of medieval Albanian\, Peter Constantine understands the isolation\, pressure\, and fear that result from being a “terminal speaker”. Through his artwork\, he raises awareness of language extinction\, which UNESCO warns could eradicate 90-95% of our world’s languages by the end of the century. In Lost Wor(l)ds:Intersemiotic Translations\, he shows the struggles and interactions between human figures and pre-Homeric Ancient Greek hieroglyphs. Through these interactions\, Constantine reaches back in time attempting to reconnect with long-forgotten words. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Peter Constantine\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPeter Constantine is a distinguished translator\, writer\, artist\, and activist dedicated to preserving and promoting linguistic diversity. DESCRIPTION:Join award-winning translator and poet duo\, Peter Constantine and Eleni Kefala\, for an engaging collaborative translation workshop. \n\n\n\nAll welcome: no language or translation experience required.  \n\n\n\nJoin award-winning visiting translator and poet duo\, Peter Constantine and Eleni Kefala\, for a fun\, engaging collaborative translation workshop. The visiting translator will provide a ‘crib’\, or basic word-for-word translation of a poem by the visiting poet\, after which we’ll form groups tasked with teasing out different wordings and phrasings for the translation. From these different versions\, we’ll collaboratively create a single translation with guidance from the visiting translator. Join us! \n\n\n\nNote: this event is only available to Manchester Metropolitan University students. Darwish has published eight poetry books advocating for justice and peace\, which have been translated into over twenty languages. His latest work\, Exhausted on the Cross\, was awarded the 2022 Sarah Maguire Prize by the Poetry Translation Centre.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKareem James Abu-Zeid is an acclaimed and award-winning translator\, editor\, teacher\, writer\, and scholar.
